The students will create an interactive snowflake holiday card that opens to reveal a special message and window scene for their loved ones. Students will be able to define and recognize radial symmetry in nature by constructing their own intricate snowflake patterns that open up to reveal 6 matching sides. They will learn the art of making customized snowflakes step by step with a scissor cutting exercise to help develop focus and fine motor skills to become precise with their designs. This is a piece that they can proudly display in their house next to their real window to remind their loved ones how special they are to them. This project will help the students develop both observational skills and drawing from imagination and how the 2 worlds can interact to form a hybrid artwork. They will then write a short story of the interaction between the animate and inanimate objects. The students will celebrate Chinese New Year by acknowledging the year of the pig (2019) by designing and creating a functioning piggy bank that can be walked like a pet out of recyclable materials such as the water bottle for the body. They will learn the significance and origins of the changing of the animal symbols for each year. They will also learn and practice saving their earnings from their allowance for something that they are working towards saving for such as a physical thing or a donation and will have a physical visualization of the amount that they saved by looking through the piggy bank. Lesson can be modified to the current year’s animal. They will also incorporate colorful magazine pieces of their choice for the petals and use beans for the seeds to show the life cycle of a plant. They will realize that they can make a difference in this world by recycling and giving a face and voice to the movement to help preserve the planet. The students will create paper puppets with movable mouth parts that can be manipulated with their hands to make words. They will make Easter themed puppets of either a bunny or a chick and add on 3-D materials such as cotton balls and feathers to add detail. The puppet will hold a biography Easter egg with their name and personality traits. This is a character that will be completely conceptualized by the students themselves.
